Keith Widaman featured in AQM's 2nd Series Colloquium May 7, 2009

UC Davis Professor, Keith Widaman, visits us at the Graduate School of Education, at UCLA, on Thursday, May 7th. He will discuss his and co-authors research on:

Investigating Factorial Invariance of Latent Variables Across Populations When
Manifest Variables Are Missing Completely.

We are very excited that Prof Widaman will lead our 2nd Series Colloquium here at UCLA on May 7th. Our First Series Colloquium featured UC Merced Professor, Will Shadish, on February 12th. You can view that presentation here.

Professor Li Cai news

Professor Li Cai led the discussion last Friday in the Research Apprenticeship Course (RAC) about IRT-based methods for quantifying reliability and measurement error from a book chapter in Computerized Adaptive Testing, A Primer, 2nd edition. You can view the paper from our AQM website.

The RAC is a great way to experience the high level of research quantitative analysis that faculty and fellows discuss in a supportive classroom setting that fosters learning.

Just recently Cai received the AERA Division D award for Outstanding Quantitative Dissertation & Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Council on Measurement in Education. You can read about it from the March 10, 2009 issue of UCLA Today. AERA has not updated their website yet but once they do, a link will be added.

Spring Quarter 2009

To recap our Winter Quarter here, we had our official Opening Reception of the AQM Program on December 8th, the start of our First Colloquium Series on February 12th, the SREE Conference on March 1st, AQM Open House on March 6 and lastly, a solid month or two of meeting and greeting new PhD Candidates. It's been busy here! And this quarter promises more!

We have started Spring quarter 2009 with a continuation of our famous RAC 288/25 course and are looking foward to our second colloquium presentation on May 7th, when UC Davis professor, Keith Widaman, visits. Plus, we have three conferences for our Psychology and Education students!

The AERA meeting in San Diego kicks off on April 13, the WPA convention in Portland, Oregon and the Big One: the IES 4th Annual Research Conference in Virgina on June 7th. Our Phd Fellows are an ambitious bunch! See http://aqm.gseis.ucla.edu/newsandevents.html for more information.

Will Shadish at the Grad School of Education

UC Merced professor, Will Shadish, visited the AQM program on Friday, 2/12/09. He was our First Colloquium Speaker and his visit was highly anticipated!

Will spent the day meeting and speaking with faculty and fellows and was gracious with his time and expertise. The Fellows spent an hour with Will at our informal "Organic To Go brown bag session" in room 1048 in Moore Hall. We had some delicous organic sandwiches, apple chips, sodas and snacks. Later, they participated in his colloquium from 3:30-5:00pm in the Reading Room on the third floor. We had standing room only with over 55 guests. Next month, we will post his PowerPoint and audio file so you can see how his topic:

When Can Nonrandomized Experiments Approximate the Answers from Randomized Experiments?

This is the essence of all university life: meeting and discussing research with top notch experts in the field.

Will Shadish's presentation was best explained to me by AQM Fellow, Mark Hansen. I hope Mark or another AQM fellow has some time to summarize Prof Shadish's research topic that day.

This week we have a visiting PhD Candidate on Wednesday from Concord, California. He will meet and greet our faculty and fellows to get an idea if the AQM program is a great match for him and us.

What is a RAC? In our world of education acronyms, it is a Research Apprenticeship Course (pronouned "rack") offered by UCLA's Graduate School of Education. Basically, the Ph.D fellows attend this two-hour, bi-monthly course to discuss their research and Curriculum Vitae writing skills, etc. The is a two unit course that is meeting in the Winter quarter.

On Friday, 1/9/09, UCLA AQM fellows presented some preliminary findings on their current research in the RAC 288, Sec 25 course. The meeting was two solid hours of discussion and they'll meet again on 1/23/09! AQM core faculty: Professors Webb, Seltzer, Martinez, Cai, Bentler and Reise were present to listen to and discuss the presentations. PhD students: Hansen, Rickles, Lin, Tessler, Richter, Preston and Thomas were on hand to contribute and present.

Will Shadish of UC Merced visiting on 2/12/09

During Winter 2008 break, AQM confirmed that Professor Will Shadish will visit with our fellows and faculty on 2/12/09.

Will is lecturing on this topic: When Can Nonrandomized Experiments Approximate the Answers from Randomized Experiments? He has a couple of papers posted on our AQM page at:

On December 8th, we had our Opening Reception of the AQM program. About 21 showed up to eat and drink and converse. The Power Point is posted.

At the reception, I finally met all the fellows. I learned that many are married with children, have had several years of corporate life before the program and are working very hard toward their degrees. A very focused bunch! I am here to help them in any way possible so that their experience within the program and the school is positive and affirming.

What is AQM at UCLA?

IT is...Advanced Quantitative Methods in Education Research

The UCLA Department of Education (in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies) and the UCLA Department of Psychology offer a program of interdisciplinary doctoral training dedicated to producing world-class quantitative educational researchers.

The program brings together faculty from Education, Psychology, Biostatistics, and Sociology to offer advanced training in research design, statistics, and educational policy issues, and to provide practical research experience with complex, real-world educational issues and problems. The program includes special opportunities in research related to teaching, learning, and testing in mathematics.
